Through Rowan County United Way’s “The HUB: A Center for Collaboration”, our community will have a space to bring together government, education, philanthropists, healthcare, churches, and nonprofits to create short- and long-term strategies. By renting out to nonprofits, we will be able to reduce duplicated services, a problem many leaders have noted, and spend fewer taxpayer dollars to address our neighbors’ basic needs.
This collaborative space will enable us to…
-
Leverage resources to reduce the need for duplicated services.
-
Spend fewer taxpayer dollars to address our neighbors’ basic needs.
-
Be the convergence of resources ― the heartbeat of Rowan County.
Hallmarks of The HUB

Measureable Impact of The HUB
1.
NEED: Mobilizing resources (monetary and in-kind) for programmatic support of the 146,880 Rowan County residents
IMPACT: More than 70,000+ residents that Rowan County United Way already assists, in the present and in the future through collaboration, education and strategic planning.
2.
NEED: In a survey conducted by Rowan County United Way, 53% of over 80 nonprofits indicated need for space for gatherings, offices and meetings.
IMPACT: The development of The HUB to provide said space for any Rowan County nonprofit organization to utilize.
3.
NEED: 80% of nonprofit organizations indicated a need for training in at least one area including Marketing, Fundraising Resources, Strategic Planning, and Board Development.
IMPACT: Free quarterly nonprofit business management workshops for any 501c3 in Rowan County.
4.
NEED: A single point of assessment for individuals and families facing crisis.
IMPACT: The Rowan County Care Navigator is a new role that will support the established NC 211 and NCCARE360 programs. This Care Navigator will directly assist individuals in crisis by connecting them to the relevant services, thereby freeing up organizations and their resources so that they can focus on developing long-term, sustainable programs.
How will The HUB be sustainable?
Rowan County United Way focuses on funding programs that result in long-term, sustainable, and transformative change. Ultimately, The HUB will further United Way’s vision of convening conversations to determine strategic approaches to Rowan County’s greatest needs.
The HUB will be assessed using predicted, measurable outcomes including lower overhead costs for participating organizations. The rent that will be received from nonprofits as tenants will help to offset United Way’s expenses. It will also offset overhead expenses for other nonprofits by means of a sliding scale rent fee based on their operating budget. Thus, allowing us to allocate more dollars into community programs & services.
The Community Chest Fund endowment will help with upkeep of the building as well. Bill Burgin from Ramsay Burgin Smith Architects, in conjunction with general contractor, David Hartman from Vertex, will make the building energy efficient.
A significant reduction in duplicated services will allow us to streamline our efforts and leverage resources; we find that we have a larger return on investment and impact for our citizens. In addition, we hope that The HUB will serve as a model for other communities, which would be an indicator of success.
